I didn't get to see the match Saturday, but Guthrie has been a revelation in midfield the second half of the season. Despite not adding goals, he has easily been a man of the match candidate every time he's played in center of the pitch.

Yeah, I have been really impressed by him this season after being undecided last season. Suppose I was a bit harsh on him as he was still young and moved to a team in turmoil.
he has never moaned when played on the wind but really took his chance. He is definately one to sit and get the ball moving like Fletcher or Carrick is for Man U.
Hopefully he will be able to push on next season.

guthrie has played very good in the centre with nolan and they played good together when guthrie was on loan at bolton.it will be interesting to see who plays in central midfield next year,i hope we dont start playing 5 man midfield all the time,we have played our best games this season with 2 wingers and nolan and guthrie in the middle.guthrie was useless whwn played on the wing and dont want to see him back there.

I was at the game on Saturday, and to be honest, I don't think Guthrie was so impressive that he would be named in team of the week.
He was decent, and passed and probed and circulated possession of the ball well I suppose. However I wouldn't say it was a team of the week performance or that he is Newcastle United's answer to Barca's Xavi Hernandez.
Anyhow, he's come on leaps and bounds this as the season has progressed. I have been one of his harsher critics but I have to give the lad credit. He will blossom into a great big big player for us in the future.
I honestly thought that Wayne Routledege would make team of the week if anything. He certainly deserved man of the match IMO. I don't recall him ever wasting possession or failing to beat his man.

As bad as Guthrie was on the wing, I think "useless" was a bit harsh. Even prior to being moved into the center of the pitch, he was the team leader for assists, because the boy does know how to cross a ball. The problems were that he doesn't have the pace or ball skills to beat a decent fullback and that he too often tried to duck inside, leaving Simpson on an island. While playing him on the right wing wasn't the best use of the lad, dropping him altogether would have meant Ryan Taylor or Fabrice Pancrate took that role. Not to mention, Guthrie's free kicks this season easily earned him a starting 11 spot.
AC, you're right he's not our answer to Xavi, but I don't expect him to be. I don't even expect him to be a Michael Carrick. But the lad could easily develop into a solid center mid for a mid-table squad. He's young, works hard, has good vision, and doesn't miss a lot of games due to knocks.

Great price for a young lad. I think the lad will have another great season next year if he plays in the middle
