CC Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Arsenal
By Tyne-Talk
October 26 2010
Newcastle United host Arsenal at St James' Park tomorrow night for their fourth round Carling Cup clash. Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is likely to play several of the youngsters who beat off Chelsea in the last round when he made 10 changes, which could see Nile Ranger and Haris Vuckic both given pitch time.
Newcastle are without the usual long term injured players, Steven Taylor (shoulder), Steve Harper (collarbone), Dan Gosling (knee), Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg) and Sol Campbell is not fit after injury ruled him out of the last two League games. Danny Guthrie is likely to play whilst Peter Lovenkrands, Alan Smith, James Perch, Wayne Routledge and Ryan Taylor could all be recalled after sitting on the bench at the weekend. Xisco is also available for selection.
Arsene Wenger picked a consistently strong side for the last round and is likely to do the same tomorrow. Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner could both start. However, Van Persie (ankle/foot) is sidelined alongside Aaron Ramsey (broken leg) whilst Almunia (elbow) could be fit for the bench.
Both sides scored 4 goals in their 3rd round game, with Arsenal beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 and Newcastle securing a 4-3 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Hughton will need to rely on his team turning a corner on home soil after a string of disappointing result at St James’ Park, whilst Wenger will be keen to secure a win with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City all out of the running.
Fact: Newcastle have won 65 of the 165 meetings between the two sides, whilst Arsenal have won 64.
Fact: This is the first time since the 2006/07 season that Newcastle have reached the 4th round.

Hopefully we may nick it 2 - 1.

Looks like you may have also lost your marbles.

Just kidding, I think it'll be a lot closer for being at SJP. Mind you, I thought we were in for a pasting at Stamford Bridge.

You're under the assumption that he was sane to begin with. That's your first mistake.

i'm well over it, but i didnt get a reply when i asked about what wenger calls financial doping, and the nature of a league where success neccessarily breeds success through the difference in prize and appearance money available to teams inside and outside of the top four. it was a while ago mind.
no replies at all, whatever they say here, so no-one upset me cos they just ignored me!
and i didnt speak to anyone badly biff, i save that for dafties...
I'm looking forward to watching it, I'm sure it won't be boring.
C'mon the Toon.

perhaps hughton learned his lesson last season, when we lost two significant players for important league matches due to injury in a coca cola cup game
Arsenal (it thought) praised themselves on skill not dirty work

we had the stronger team and a bit of luck, you had us rocking at 2-0 but fabregas steadied the ship.
4-0 flatters us, but we couldnt score a goal for you.

Its a disgrace how they are treating your manager. he would have to win league to keep his job

Even Perch had probably his best game for us but unfortuantly still conceded 4. We made a lot of changes and obviously dont have anywhere near as good a squad as Arsenal. Ranger put himself about even though he is more like Bambi than Shola. Vukic had some nice touches and also gets stuck in.
First goal a bit unlucky, second could have been offside or chalked off for the foul. Third was poor by Guthrie then a top finish and forth was right at the end and a top finish.
Good game but totally agree about the subs. Im not sure I would have risked it if we were only one down but at two I would have just stuck with who was on.
Good crack from the Gooners who have posted. See you lot for the premier game.
Vuckic (his touch reminds me of Tiote) and Ranger (nobody at the back for them could handle his speed) were bright spots, sure. But for me, that's about it. I have to say, I was shocked at how poorly we started. Maybe Hughton shouldn't have stated that he didn't give a damn about the competition so openly before the match.
and ranger seems to have something too, but a head full of wasps as he cannot make his mind up quickly enough what to do when the ball is played to him.
the coaches need to earn their corn now, and get these two up to bench standard this season. they are old enough, and both have strengths we need to add to our first team pool
