Wayne Routledge has been awarded Man of the Match by Tyne-Talk's resident player rater, Wasim4nufc, for his performance today against Chelsea. High scores were also awarded to Jose Enrique, Steven Taylor and Sol Campbell. Read on to see how the rest of the team faired...
Player Ratings
Tim Krul (7) - Had one or two anxious moments but overall I thought he dealt well with the crosses coming in.
Danny Simpson (7) - He kept Malouda quiet for much of the game and was unlucky to see their equaliser come as a result of his deflection. Pushed forward nicely as well.
Steven Taylor (7.5) - Considering it was his first official game since January, I thought he did really well. It will give him some confidence to build on for the next game.
Sol Campbell (7.5) - He made one superb block in the first half and showed a real calm head at the back.
Jose Enrique (8) - Again showed why he is such an important player for us. He did not allow anyone to pass him. Went forward when he could but more importantly his defending was excellent. Made one or two key challenges and cleared one off the line as well.
Wayne Routledge (8) - I thought Routledge was excellent today. He put a few good balls into the box and kept Ashley Cole honest. Made some good runs and was unlucky not to score with a goal bound volley. Would be unlucky if he does not start the next game.
Cheik Tiote (7) - It was good to have him back today. He really made some solid tackles and hardly lost the ball.
Danny Guthrie (6.5) - He had a decent game but failed to deliver enough quality from our set pieces. After a good first half he started to fade in the second half but a performance full of commitment none the less.
Jonas Gutierrez (6.5) - Guilty of giving the ball away which ultimately led to them scoring but he ran until the very end and if he had a little more support we could have done better on the counter attack.
Shola Ameobi (7) - Showed glimpses of the old Shola Ameobi where he was sloppy, miss controlling the ball and making one or two errors but overall he was good especially in the first half. I wish we played more balls into the box as he looked as though he had a goal in him if he was just given the correct service.
Andy Carroll (6.5) - Started the game well and managed to score through putting the Chelsea defenders under pressure but unfortunately for him today, he became more and more anonymous the longer the game went on. Became a frustrated figure but credit should go to him for still managing to get on the score sheet.

I actually feel the complete opposite there. He had one bad give away at the closing end of the match, but his second half was superb, as opposed to a first half where he barely saw the ball.

I just think we had a better first half and looked more dangerous. We did have a few chances in a good period in the second half, but don't be guided by the chalkboard. I checked virtually our entire team, and it says we did not get a successful pass in the first 22 minutes! Must be some kind of mistake but my point is just that I think we allowed Chelsea to dominate the game in the second half and our players had less of the ball as a result.

carroll 6.5 :O he worked so hard and won the ball countless times not to mention how many players wouldnt have chased the ball for the goal
think tiote was motm for me had a blinder
as for ameobi i await lmk to tell us how well he did -_-

I missed the fisrt 30mins, but I can see why Tiote is on 6 yellow so far.
There were several "challenges" he made and got away with which on a bad day he would have been carded for.
Good that we have someone prepared to commit though!

To me Carroll failed to come into the game in the second half and I think you could see him get frustrated by it. He did help out at the back but I would have liked to have seen him more involved in the second half hence his rating going below 7.

Cheers for the scores again Wasim.
Thought Krul had a good game. He would have safely had the ball for their goal if it didnt take that nick off Simpson. His handling and coming for the ball impressed again and his kicking was good apart from one.
Sol and Taylor were good but thought Sol edged it. Taylor dwelled on the ball a couple of times but since it was his first game back we can let him off with that.
Jose can really infuriate me. I didnt think he had quite as good a game but maybe you see a more balanced view from the tv. I agree nobody got past him but he can really give the ball away cheaply and if he could take this out of his game he would be some player. He has to remember that he not in the championship anymore and that the teams in this league will punish you. Would have to see it again but I thought he was as much to blame for their goal as Jonas.
I agree Rout was MOTM but Tiote wasnt far behind. Thought Guthrie had a good game and was tidy on the ball spraying it about well. His dead ball wasnt the best though but suppose he is finding his feet again. Jonas was again poor apart from the last ten minutes.
Shola didnt look fit to me and dont agree that he scored higher than Carroll. Our goal looked a lost cause but he chased it down and again he put himself about a lot defending for the last ten or so. Thought Ranger did decent for the short time he was on.

Chalkboard got updated last night or today. You were right, something was wrong as it didn't log the first half very well. After further review, both our points seem to be confirmed. On short passing, Guthrie was 26/30 in the first half but 24/26 in the second, so he did get better as the game progressed. However, in your favor he slowed down significantly in the last 10 minutes or so, probably because he hadn't played a full 90 all year.

Thanks for the comments Biffins, it's always nice getting a view from someone who was at the stadium and who can see things we can't. I think we all agreed that Guthrie had a good game and it would be very interesting if we played both Barton and Guthrie together with Tiote protecting them as we'd have two players capable of opening teams up with their passing range. As waffles points out as well, Guthrie will only get better the more minutes he gets under his belt as his still getting that full match fitness and sharpness back.

weekend away daraghl, but i am quite sure the fenham pele will have been the best player on the pitch.

Thought Toite was motm, but also thought Guthrie had a good game, decent point when you take into account our home form and it being Chelsea.
Would be good to see Guthrie get more starts in the centre

Barton's back now, so it will be interesting to see what CH does-put Barton back out wide (likely) with Tiote & Guthrie in the middle? Or does Barton go back in the middle with Routledge out wide? Or will we see more 4-4-2 with wor Faluwashola in the team?

if i had to guess, this isnt what i want to see, but guthrie may well play wide of barton and tiote. barton has seniority, i think he'd expect to play his first choice position ahead of guthrie.
hughton isnt always that easy to predict though, we could see a little shuffle of the pack as he has a few options this weekend he hasnt had before. ok, no nolan, but routledge did fairly well so has to be in the picture, and both guthrie and joey will expect to feature.
but i'll save guessing the line up and formation for a west brom pre-match thread, rather than this chelsea one!
