Andy Carroll has been awarded Man Of The Match by Tyne-Talk's player rater Wasim4nufc, for his performance and goal in yesterday's game against Manchester City. Read on to see how the rest of the team faired.
Player Ratings
Tim Krul (5) - His terrible mistake cost us the first goal and that gave us a mountain to climb thereafter. Hopefully he'll get another opportunity for I'm sure he'll learn from today's mistake.
Danny Simpson (6) - Put in some good tackles although his crossing left a lot to be desired.
Steven Taylor (6) - Did not have a bad game but needs to do more if he is to keep Mike Williamson out of the team in my opinion. Did not close some of the City attackers quickly enough at times which could have made the scoreline worse.
Fabricio Coloccini (6.5) - Good to have the centre half back in the team today but it was not enough to stop City from scoring thrice. Was the unlucky guy to have the shot deflect off him which ended our hopes of getting something from today. Should not have turned his back on the ball! Had a decent game overall though.
Jose Enrique (6.5) - Worked hard for the team and tried to go forward as much as he could he could although Milner kept him busy throughout.
Wayne Routledge (6) - Started brightly but soon faded and was replaced after the hour mark.
Joey Barton (6.5) - Was not afraid to get stuck in. City though made sure he was not able to influence the game for us the way he has done of late. Did manage to create an assist for our only goal today.
Cheik Tiote (6) - Failed to protect the back four today at times and was guilty of lazily giving the ball away for their second goal. Did have a much better second half though which was a good recovery.
Kevin Nolan (6) - The move to play him up top with Carroll did not pay off. He had one or two chances but other than that starting Ranger might have been the better option in hindsight.
Jonas Gutierrez (6) - He too worked really hard but was unable to find that quality ball in the last third that allowed us to score from. Can't fault his effort though.
Andy Carroll (7) - Scored our only goal and fought really hard for the team. Wasn't afraid to shoot from outside the box either. Seems to play better with a partner up front though.

Nile Ranger (6.5) - Did not quite have the same impact as the last game but did well enough to perhaps warrant a start in place of Nolan in the next game.

Thought the whole goddamn team looked listless throughout much of the game. I'm not impressed by lots of meaningless possession without much of a goal threat.

I think that is incredibly harsh and unneccesarily results orientated.
Thankfully at the moment we're not that desperate that a good performance without a result is meaningless.
City parked the bus somewhat after the two early goals and short of aimlessly hoofing the ball upto Carroll there isn't much more the lads could have done to get back into the game. Which to their credit they did do when Carroll scored.

Games aren't 85 minutes long, starting in the 6th minute. It makes it worse to me that for 5 minutes of careless, reckless play, 85 minutes of a good performance was wasted(though we failed to threaten the opposition goal as much as our possession might lead one to believe).
Mainly, I'm tired of watching very highly-paid footballers looking like they'd rather be anywhere else on Boxing Day.

In my defense you were referring too "much of the game" which I assume would include some of that 85 minutes of good play you wrote off as 'listless'.

Even in the 85 minutes that were good, there was listlessness on display. Too much tentative possession around the box, no cutting edge. Only Routledge and Carroll seemed up for it, and only Barton sent anything decent into the box. Tiote was late in several tackles and a very lucky boy by my estimate.

...its also the way man city play most weeks to be fair, gegt ahead and sit deep. we shouldnt kid ourselves that we could have spent so long in possession if we werent already two down.
its why city will fall short in my opinion, when a title winning side gets ahead, they either kill the game properly (keep the ball, run the legs and the will out of the oppo) or they go for the jugular. city do neither, they try to keep you at arms length but arent convincing enough, often enough. i sadi last time we played city, lots of teams will come out of games against city thinking they had only just lost - its the way city play. they'll win enough to stay near the top, but they will let a few slip, too.

Completely agree with that analysis, lmk.
Mancini is trying to win the PL with Italian tactics. I'm not so sure he can't pull it off-Mourinho's Chelsea wasn't totally dissimilar.

for a neutral, great to see a different team (two if, like 'arry, you count spurs) mixing things at the top. whether either of them last the course and have something to fight for in may is a question we can enjoy watching the answer to unfold, hopefully not while our season does likewise.
my tip? head says man u, but i would get a kick out of arsenal taking it, and i think they can if they have no worse luck with injuries.

I'm amused just by Arsenal being involved; the league seemed to be heading the way of the SPL with a 'big two.' Arsenal can definitely win, especially if Van Persie finds any sort of form and their defense holds. I'm thinking the first is likely but the second is a much tougher ask. I'm not at all convinced by Koscielny/Squillaci/Djourou & Fabianski. City have a shot as well but in the final analysis I agree with you. I'd guess that at the end of the season you'll be able to point to a few of their matches that ended in draws and say "with a bit more killer instinct there they would have been in it up to the end..."
