Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Wigan Athletic v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
December 31 2010

Newcastle United travel to the DW Stadium for Sunday’s televised game against Wigan Athletic. With just two points and two places separating the two sides in the Premier League, both will be looking to pick up points to kick start 2011 as both sides are dangerously close to a place in the bottom 3.

Newcastle go into the game on the back of four defeats in the last six games, one draw and just one win. Wigan host on the back of a slightly better run in form, with three games drawn, one win and two defeats from their last 6 games.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew may have started his managerial career at the club with a win against Liverpool, but his selections since have proved poor on the pitch and to make matters worse for him this weekend, leading scorer, striker Andy Carroll is absent with a thigh injury.

Newcastle continue to be without Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg), Dan Gosling (knee) and Ryan Taylor (ankle), but Shola Ameobi is set to replace Carroll, having recovered from a hamstring injury, whilst Jose Enrique and Sol Campbell are also expected to be available.

Kevin Nolan returns after serving a 1 match ban for collecting 5 yellow cards so far this season.

For Wigan former Charles N’Zogbia is unavailable through suspension, bad news for Roberto Martinez as N’Zogbia has a habit of rubbing salt into the wounds of his former club. Emmerson Boyce (leg), Franco Di Santo (ankle), Victor Moses (dislocated shoulder) and James McCarthy (ankle) are all out through injury, whilst Antolin Alcaraz (thigh) is a doubt and will be assessed before the game.

Fact: Wigan have not won at home since early November, but are unbeaten in their last 4 games against Newcastle.

Fact: Danny Guthrie is the only player to have scored at the DW Stadium for Newcastle, back on Boxing Day 2008.

Fact: Wigan have scored just 17 goals in 19 games this season.

am going for a 2 - 0 result. regardless of whether carroll plays or not, I think the injurys and suspensions to wigan's team should make them pretty toothless, and I can see joey scoring one and then ranger/nolan/carroll scoring woff a corner.

Its on sky here too lokking really forwRD TO IT. aS i think ppl are getting a little carried away with the results against man city and tottenham. I mean at the begining of the season would anyone hand on heart expect us to win against them teams ?no. And yet we played decent enough and were never outshone too much. I think the great results against Arsenal and (a struggling) Liverpool have giving ppl a bit inflated ego's etc. This now against teams we should be beaten is where our season will be decided. So far this season we have played too poorly against many lower reputation teams, I dont think Pardew will allow that from now on, every game must be played with 110% effort.

wow rant over time to breathe ..... and relax.

What I dont f00king want is to play just one up front. Even without Carroll we can still put two up with Shola and either Loven/Ranger. They have a horrible defence and we really should try and get at them so for that reason I would put Ranger in.

They are good passers and if we try and sit back and defend they will open us up.

Got the telly on ready so hope it's a good spectacle.

If we play two up front I think we will win otherwise it could be a poor game for us.

2-0 to us.

Agree with comments above-I'd be @#$%& if a member of my pub team missed that header.

But we've got the better of the game thus far. Need to turn that into a goal!

Our wide defenders need to stop showing Diame and Cleverly the inside of the field. They're in there to cut in and shoot, not cross.

We're living exceptionally dangerously now.

We seem unable to win headers in our own box. Taylor is being beaten regularly and also has muffed a clearance. Still wondering just what Williamson's done to be demoted.

Playing well so far. Let's hope we don't concede from a set piece in the second half because let's be honest that's the only way Wigan are going to score today.

Must be scouting a job.

At least he can't offend the Wigan fans. They don't have any.

The sound on my teevee all seems to be coming from the traveling Toon Army!

Wigan are more lively this half, though. Need to push on and get another.

Interesting that Hodgson's scouting anyone. My guess is Rodallega, but maybe he's actually running the rule over Shola!

Don't see what AP's about with these subs. Guessing he's just getting Best in the shop window.

Routledge...don't know what to say anymore. He'll beat fullbacks for pace all day but he's now had three chances to cross unchallenged and he's woefuly mis-hit all three.

I would say Best only got a run because he is being sold.

Didn't look too great did he?

To be fair though he hasn't played in a long time and is bound to be a bit rusty.

I don't think the Barton tackle was a red. Although it was studs up his feet were virtually on the ground when he made the tackle. Went over the top of the ball a little bit, which always make it looks worse. Fair decision imo.

Wasn't the best game in the world, and we need to bring in something to change the team, and I know we won but we played a bloody awful team today but atleast we have got 3 more points on the board

Barton's tackle wasn't a definite red, otl-right about that. But that one's a judgment call for the ref and some would have sent him packing. He certainly came over the ball and he certainly showed studs. There was no ill intent in it, though and the ball was there to be won.

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Wigan Athletic v Newcastle Utd

I think a weaker ref with Bartons reputation would have sent him packing. Probably helped having the game basically finished, where if it had been earlier on then you never know

Personally it wasn't a red but a fair yellow

lets take it then, as in previous matches barton has been shown red when another player may have only seen yellow. he surely will do so again, too.

I agree some refs would have sent him based purely on reputation. But some refs would be wrong.

I heard the other day that statistically he is the most effective tackler in the premier league. And I think it shows. He certainly isn't shy and I think every team would be grateful to have him because he puts in for 90 minutes.

On that note I think MotM is fair enough because he broke up a lot of Wigan play in the midfield, won possession and setup the goal and passed well. No one else looked that impressive to be honest. Jonas looked good but only really in the final 15 minutes when the game became more stretched, apart from that no one was that great today.

Still a win is a win is a win. And 3 points badly needed.

Howay the lads!

Since it was Barton, I was sure he would be off.

Some refs would have sent off anyone for that challenge but to be fair, most of those refs aren't English.
