SHOLA DENIES SWITCH

Newcastle United's Shola Ameobi has rubbished today's reports suggesting that he was thinking of switching international sides from England to Nigeria.

Reports had suggested that Nigeria wanted him to play in the African Cup of Nations in January, byt Shola has said that "no such thought has crossed his mind" and he is, and will always be, committed to England.

SPEAKING TO SKYSPORTS.COM, SHOLA SAID: "Three years ago when I first broke through, there was approaches from both the Nigerian and English associations.

"I spoke to my parents and to the gaffer and we chose England for all the right reasons and I have enjoyed all my international experience.

"I am a player who is looking to play at the highest level like anyone, but I am just training hard and looking to play well for my club and if that happens perhaps I might get looked at by Sven.

"So reports suggesting I was unhappy at not being called up are complete rubbish.

"I have really enjoyed my time with the England Under-21s and that makes me want to break into the full squad.

"I have not had any contact with Nigeria for three years and do not intend to.

"Obviously it is a massive honour if I am being mentioned. "If the day comes when I do get a call from England, then it will be one of the proudest ever for me and my family.

"But, as I said, I am concentrating on playing for Newcastle and that is going great.

"I am learning so much from playing with Alan, he was the England captain and he talks to me all the time, which is great for me.

"With the likes of Scott Parker and Anthony Gardner breaking into the squad it gives the younger lads hope and all you can do is play well."
