SHEARER FOR MANAGER!

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has confirmed that he would love skipper and striker Alan Shearer to succeed Sir Bobby Robson as manager.

Shepherd said: "If I had a preference I would like the Newcastle manager to be a Geordie, so that narrows it down from about 30 million people to about three million.

"Just because a HGV driver has a licence, doesn't mean to say he wants to drive a lorry, although one day he might be desperate to get behind the wheel.

"I didn't even know Alan hadn't taken his coaching badges. Now that he has, I am delighted for him.

"The Geordie who doesn't want to be Newcastle manager, in my opinion, doesn't exist."
