GIVEN: I Turned Down Man Utd as A Teenager

GIVEN SNUBBED UNITED

Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has revealed how as a kid, he turned down a move to Manchester United.

Given said: "When I was 16 I came across from Ireland at the invitation of Alex Ferguson. I got first-class treatment but I picked up an injury and I went home.

"They wanted me back but my hero, Peter Schmeichel, was No 1 at the time and I could see him being there a long time - which he was."
