With huge amounts of interest in the Newcastle midfielder Hugo Viana, Tottenham look set to have a battle to sign him but are still set to try and try again. When he arrived at Newcastle as “the best young player in the world" we all thought we were on to something.

When he arrived at Newcastle as “the best young player in the world" we all thought we were on to something. But since then Viana has failed to live up to expectations, and has asked for a move after not gaining regular first team football. After being at Newcastle for only 18 months the 21 year old who came from sporting Lisbon in an 8.5milion deal has made an impression on scouts whilst playing for the reserves.

Last month Sporting Lisbon attempted to take Viana back on loan but Sir Bobby Robson concerned over Lee Bowyers injury shunned the loan deal and again this week Sir Bobby has refused to talk of loaning him out. This comes as bad news for Viana who is desperate to play first team football on a regular basis.

However Spurs are still keen to sign him and don’t intend to give up the fight just yet. With Spurs not being in a great financial state the idea to take Viana on loan sounds appealing but they have been linked with a 4million move for the Portuguese midfielder.
