The 24-year-old Welsh international was presented with the simplest of opportunities to open his Premiership account at St James' Park this season with an easy tap-in on Saturday at home to Middlesbrough on.

Bellamy dedicated the goal to eldest son Ellis as he celebrated his seventh birthday.

He was right on the spot to make the most of an Ehiogu's slip-up, to drag his side back into the tie.

"I'll take tap-ins all day," he said.

"They're not something I get enough of. It was a mistake, but you could see a little collision coming between Ehiogu and Mark Schwarzer.

"It was just a case of me being on my toes ready for it and I was left with a simple goal."
