SPEED'S REACTION TO CUP VICTORY

Gary Speed feels that his club will have to make a huge improvement on Wednesday nights performance if they are to make any further progress in this season’s UEFA Cup competition.

Despite beating Valerenga 4-2 over two legs in the third round of the cup, Welsh midfielder Speed is the first United player to admit that their football has not been up to scratch over the last few games.

Speed said: “We’re not playing well at the moment, and the only way that will chance is by working hard in training and in matches.

“We’ve drawn a lot of games lately in the Premiership, and we haven’t really played well in the two legs against Valerenga. We’ll have to improve in the next round if we want to go further in the competition, that’s for sure, because we’re getting to the nitty gritty now.

“But on the positive side of things, we’re not losing games. I think our record is something like two defeats in 20 games, so that’s better than losing.”
