GIVENS VIEW ON CUP GLORY

Newcastle directors are desperate for the club to establish a place in the Premiership's top four and return to the Champions League next season, but with Newcastle into the last 16 of the Uefa Cup, 'keeper Given would rather see his side lift a major trophy rather than recieve the cash which the CL would generate.

"As a player I want a medal and you don't get anything for finishing fourth," he said.

"The chairman might have different views but as a player you want to win things - I'd rather win the Uefa Cup.

"I'd love to win something with Newcastle. You don't want to look back on your career and finish up empty-handed.

"I watched Middlesbrough win the Carling Cup and while it was a great day for the North-East, I couldn't help thinking it was a pity we weren't there.

"There's no reason why we couldn't have been but that was another medal lost."
