Midfielder Gary Speed has insisted that it is Newcastle United's defence that is responsible for keeping their season alive. With the Magpies' struggling in attack in recent weeks, the contribution the defence has kept United in the run-in for the Premiership's top four.

SPEED HAILS DEFENCE AND 'KEEPER

The contribution of goalkeeper Shay Given along with Robson's back four, have been invaluable this season as Newcastle United continue to challenge for the Uefa Cup place in the Premiership's top four.
"It's Shay and the defence who are seeing us through a difficult patch," said Speed.
"Those lads have come in for a lot of stick but I think they're the best thing about the team at the moment.
"Shay made a truly great save against Valerenga when he pushed one of their first-half shots onto the bar and he's in a rich vein of form.
"He made superb saves in Oslo and at Portsmouth and without him you wonder what might have happened.
"Because we're not playing well we rely on our top players performing to the best of their abilities and he's doing that."
