The home side started brightly with Robbie Keane, part of a three-pronged strikeforce in behind Fredi Kanoute and Jermain Defoe, teed up Ledley King who fired just wide from 25 yards.
Newcastle's first real response came after 12 minutes as Craig Bellamy was brought down by Michael Brown (who otherwise had a fantastic game) on the left side of the area. Gary Doherty however, did well to block Laurent Robert's curling free-kick.
Kasey Keller had to be at his best to keep out Olivier Bernard's long range effort after 25 minutes.
Moments later, Mauricio Taricco clipped Aaron Hughes inside the area, but nothing was given. This made Toon manager Sir Bobby Robson furious, who confronted referee Howard Webb at half-time to make his feelings known.
Spurs' got spurred into life again and Doherty saw his 15 yard short whistle past the wrong side of the post (from his point of view) after Christian Ziege's initial effort had been blocked. Ziege then went close again just before the break.

Alan Shearer drilled wide from 18 yards just after the break, while Michael Brown went close for Spurs at the other end.
Tottenham continued to push forward looking for the opening goal and Jermaine Defoe saw his shot superbly blocked by Jonathan Woodgate. King then drove wide from 20 yards following a defensive error by Lee Bowyer.
Darren Ambrose fired a cross into the ahea and it was heading for straight for Shearer, Anthony Gardner was at his best to intercept it.
Spurs' substitute Stephane Dalmat then blazed over the from distance, before the deadlock was finally broken with just four minutes left on the clock. Subsitute Dalmat nicked the ball from Woodgate and whipped a cross into the area - only for Newcastle's Andy O'Brien to slice the ball into his own net from six yards!
