Shearer: It Was Criminal!

Alan Shearer has described yesterday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur as "criminal", but insisted that his team was to blame for their own downfall after failing to clear their lines from a throw-in and then being punished by the move that produced Andy O'Brien's 86th minute own goal.

"CRIMINAL!"

Shearer was fuming at the final whistle at his team for blowing the chance to reclaim fourth spot in the Premiership and said: "We had two or three chances to try and get rid of the ball before they scored, but we decided to try and play football in our own box which is criminal - you cannot do it at this level.
"We didn't deserve to lose, but we've been punished by a late goal again and it's amazing the number of times we concede like that."
Referee Howard Webb failed to award a penalty to Newcastle during the first-half when Aaron Hughes was tripped by Mauricio Taricco, and Shearer added: "I thought we had an excellent penalty claim turned down, it looked cast-iron but we cannot use that as an excuse - it was a poor decision, but the game goes on.
"Messing around in our own box cost us. We shot ourselves in the foot, there was no way I could see us losing it and it's just rubbing salt into the wounds that it was an own goal to take a point away from us.
"We played better than we have done in the league for some time but we've come away with nothing.
"We will get back to winning ways - but silly mistakes have cost us again."
