Newcastle United boss Sir Bobby Robson has said that defender Jonathan Woodgate can fill suspended Rio Ferdinand's shoes this year in Euro 2004.

WOODY OVER RIO?

ROBSON SAID:

"I expect him to be fit for the European Championships. He should be pushing himself for England.

"I think he is in the same class as John Terry and Sol Campbell. He is in that bracket of high-calibre centrehalves and it is up to Sven-Goran Eriksson whether or not he picks him.

"It depends how much Jonathan wants it. He has to want it.

"I heard his comment about that and I meant to question it with him. He doesn't complain about his stomach anymore.

"When we took him back to the surgeon who operated, he said it was merely scar tissue and that he had to fight the pain and get over it and see it through. But Jonathan wants to play and we can hopefully get the season over without him coming out of the side again.

"He'll not have much rest if he is picked for Euro 2004. But if he is picked, does well and his problem does not flare up - and there is no reason why it should - then he'll be fine."
