Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd was relieved yesterday, when the financial figures released for the club were released, although a loss in profits as a result of United's failure to qualify for the Champions League proper was evident.

FANTASTIC CASH FIGURES

A £7,400,000 drop in profits was recorded as a result of the exit. In the club's latest figures for the half-year (ending on 31 January), total operating profit fell from £12m to £4.6m. Operating profit before player amortisation and trading was £11.1m, £9m down on the same point last year.

Also, as a result of the CL exit, television income was reduced from £21.5m to £14.1m.

Shepherd said: "They're fantastic. Everybody was expecting to see figures that were not as good as last year and expecting to see something of a downturn but all brands and all the different sectors of the business have come through.

"Again Newcastle are going to surprise a few with their numbers.

"Everyone was always going to say that about the Champions League but in the real world, we're not in the Champions League and we've just had to get on with running the business. I'm certainly pleased with the numbers and I'm sure everyone else will be.

"We have an excellent team on and off the field.

"The way forward is to try to get into the last eight in Europe and let's face it, there will be only two or possibly three English teams left in Europe, so that's not a bad position to be in."
