Andy O'Brien has assured Hughes that he has no intention whatsoever of attempting to replace him from the Magpies' starting XI.
He has played the last couple of times as an emergency right-back with Hughes suffering from a damaged a calf (picked up during the 3-1 victory over Charlton last Saturday).
The Republic of Ireland international will be happy when Hughes is available for selection again.
"It's not a position I want to get used to, to be honest," he said.
"It's something that I don't really want to get used to, but I'm happy to play there if injuries or tactics dictate that."
