Shearer Surprised, But Delighted At Robson's Deal

SHEARER SURPRISED BUT DELIGHTED

The former England international and Blackburn Rovers striker insists that the squad was kept in the dark over Robson's future plans and only found out about the deal once pen was put to paper.

Robson is now under contract at Newcastle until the end of next season. Shearer himself is retiring at the end of next season, and has been tipped to takeover as manager, but at the moemnt is convinced that the news of the new deal is a huge boost for his side.

Speaking to the News of the World, Shearer said: "It's fantastic news Bobby has signed a new contract.

"He has done very well for us and the more success we have under him the better.

"No one knew what was happening so it came as a surprise to everyone. We are delighted.

"Everyone can now concentrate on going for that fourth spot.

"The situation is in our hands, our confidence is high and I think it will be a close-run thing between us and Liverpool for the fourth place."
