The 35-year-old ex-England full-back returned to his old club to help out the Dons following the sale of several players by administrators.
Barton will now concentrate on coaching instead.
He said: “I have had a wonderful career, but it is time to call it a day.
“I am in the middle of taking my UEFA ’A’ coaching badge, and it is time to move on to something else.
“There are a couple of options open to me on the coaching front, but we will have to wait and see.”
