Newcastle United and Wales midfield Gary Speed refused to follow his manager's example, and blame the UEFA Cup trip to Majorca for the clubs disappointing defeat by Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium at the weekend.

EUROPE IS NO EXCUSE

Although United did not get home from Palma until three o'clock on Friday morning, Gary Speed said:

"I don't think you can use that as an excuse.

"Last year we were praised to the hilt on our performances after our European games.

"But now we have lost a game after Europe we cannot turn around and say we are tired as an excuse because in the past we have played well after being away."

It was a tactical game which Robson's men lost at Bolton.

Speed added: "Bolton were well organised and disciplined and worked hard for each other as we knew they would do.

"But they do knock the ball long and we got drawn into doing exactly the same without bringing it down and passing it about, especially in the second half, and that suited Bolton.

"In the second half we never really created anything because we got drawn into the way they were playing.

"We have got to be braver and want the ball more and not be afraid of making mistakes."

The midfielder left immediately after the game in order to hook up with the Wales international side for Wednesday's friendly with Hungary in Budapest.

Speed is also expected to play on Saturday against his former club Everton at St James' Park and warned : "We cannot afford to drop too many more points between now and the end of the season and we have made it hard for ourselves."
