Newcastle United boss Sir Bobby Robson has hit back at Wales manager Mark Hughes over his fitness concerns of striker Craig Bellamy. Hughes moaned about the fact that Bellamy was withdrawn from his team, but Robson explains his reasons.

ROBSON HITS BACK AT HUGHES

Bellamy was pulled out of this week's friendly over Hungary in Budapest due to hamstring problems. Hughes wasn't too happy!

"I rang Mark Hughes myself and left a long message on his answer phone," said Robson.

"Our club doctor spoke to the Welsh doctor and our physio Derek Wright spoke to the Welsh physio.

"I also rang Eddie Niedzwiecki the Welsh coach because I couldn't get hold of Mark, and I had a long chat with him to explain the situation. So Wales got four phone calls in all.

"Craig Bellamy, at his own volition, didn't want to go. He's nervous about his hamstring and he didn't want to go and risk coming back injured because he knew the balloon would go up."
