Despite defeating Everton 4-2 at St James' Park on Saturday, Magpies' skipper Alan Shearer and manager Sir Bobby Robson have both showed concern over Newcastle's defensive frailties.

SHEARER AND ROBSON CONCERNED

Newcastle moved back into fourth place in The Premiership, but conceded a sloppy goal from a corner. Such lapses could prove crucial come the end of the season.

Robson's side have often conceded late goals. The Magpies' MUST put a stop to this, if they want to stay in the fourth spot, as Shearer explains:

"It was a must win for us and anything else would have been a disaster. It has not been vintage Newcastle, but we battled well and secured the points.

"When it went to 3-2 we were nervous, it was a sloppy goal to give away and hopefully it won't cost us as goal difference could be crucial at the end of the season.

"But we are pleased with the three points and battled hard today.

"You don't win anything for fourth place, it is an achievement to get into the Champions League but a club this size should never settle for fourth place.

"It is vital (UEFA Champions League football) because it gives you the money to attract players and good players want to play in the Champions League.

"We have got to improve our away form, if we had been better away from home we would be up challenging Manchester United and Chelsea, but we have not done that and it is something we need to look at."

Sir Bobby Robson agrees with Shearer and added: "I think the two goals for will be important, as that is what it could come down to at the end of the season.

"We conceded a header from a corner which is a shame, it is a flaw in our mechanism, but to get a positive of two goals helps."
