We welcomed April with a successful (4-2) win over Everton and April welcomed us with April showers (or torrential rain.) The tabloids had a field day before noon on April Fools Day and the rumour mill was whirring away! One of many stories was that of Gerard Houllier’s departure from premiership rivals Liverpool. He was reported to be extremely upset; by the “fake” interview published in a foreign newspaper claiming the Frenchman had “quit the club.” Needless to say NUFC got off lightly with the practical jokes and rumours, believing that the news of Ameobi’s desire to leave Newcastle United for a team which will play him regularly, to be the only rumours.
However since then more and more reports have come to light telling the say sorry tale. My question is does Shola really believe that he is above the likes of NUFC hero Alan Shearer and Super Striker Craig Bellamy. In big teams you earn your place, now I was once a critic of Ameobi – choosing not to have faith in him and believing that it wouldn’t work out for him at Newcastle. Yet he proved me wrong. Despite playing well in several games he isn’t above Bellamy or Shearer. Bellamy post injury is a new player and is scoring more and more on the pitch and Alan doesn’t give up. Ameobi has a long career ahead of him and he will get what he wants – he just has to wait in line. Whining at the press doesn’t help get a place in the team. Yet would he really want to throw away the prospects playing for Newcastle United could bring for him and move to a smaller team with a minimum chance of winning anything? I’m not so sure – maybe he is all talk!
Darren Ambrose is my star player of late – he has played well and a few mistakes haven’t shattered his confidence infact he has played better after overcoming those errors – Good! He was recognised in “The Sun” as player of the match against Everton and his talent shone through. He is definitely proving he can play Solano’s game on the pitch but it will take several excellent displays before he takes Solano’s place in thousands of the fans hearts!
UEFA cup is our only hope of silverware this season and I personally think that we can go the whole distance and claim it as our own. We just need to keep winning. It would boost team spirit and the famous St James Park atmosphere can finally be restored.
My one fear, which has been niggling away since the fixture list was announced at the beginning of the season is that we face Liverpool away on the last day of the season. We need to be four points clear before starting that game to ensure we claim the fourth spot and NO late goals!
There again we cannot forget about the other teams such as Birmingham which are quietly doing exceptionally well and chasing for fourth – good luck to them but not too much eh!
