71-year-old Newcastle United boss Sir Bobby Robson was delighted with his defence after last night's 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Cup.

ROBSON'S DELIGHT

Robson returned to one of his former clubs knowing that it would be a tough game. Mateja Kezman, who has been linked with a move to Newcastle, netted in the 15th-minute to give the home side a lead, but the Magpies' responded via Jermaine Jenas who levelled with a header in first-half injury time.

Newcastle go into the return-leg with an away goal advantage, and are in good shape to progress to the next round of the competition.

"We conceded one goal, but Shay Given didn't really have to make any sensational saves," said Robson.

"We protected him well, we defended the box well on corners and free-kicks, which they seemed to have a large number of, and nobody ever won any vital headers, just one in the second half when Shay made a good save.

"That was about the only chance, the only time we lost the ball in the air, and in that sense, we defended well."

He added: "I think, naturally, I have to be satisfied.

"We didn't deserve to win, so I have to be satisfied with a draw and to score.

"The tie, in my opinion, is still very open, it's for both teams. At 1-1, it's anybody's game and the team that makes the chances and scores the chances in the second game will go through, no doubt."
