SHEARER WANTS UEFA CUP

Newcastle United skipper Alan Shearer has vowed that the Magpies' will win the UEFA Cup in an attempt to make up for this seasons disappointing Champions League campaign.

He said: "We said when we were knocked out of the Champions League the only way to make up for it was by winning the UEFA Cup. That hasn't changed. The belief is there that we can do it."

Midfielder Gary Speed said: "We are at home with the cushion of an away goal and we'll be kicking ourselves if we don't go through.

"We have learned the hard way this season - after a first-leg win in Belgrade - that if you get a good result away it doesn't mean you'll get through the tie. We were given a bit of a harsh lesson against Belgrade.

"It didn't work for us then but hopefully we can take that lesson through against PSV. Everybody wants to be in the Champions League and we were bitterly disappointed to miss out.

"But the UEFA Cup is the next best thing and to win it would be a fantastic achievement for this club. There's a buzz in the dressing room because it's the middle of April and we still have everything to play for.
