French full back Olivier Bernard, has revealed that he is in talks with Newcastle United about a contract extension.

Bernard seems to have secured his first-team place following a very good season and his now enjoying the Magpies' UEFA Cup campaign.

Speaking to L'Equipe, he said: "In September 2000, I refused the professional contract that Lyon offered me.

"I had a three-day trial (with Newcastle) without saying anything to anyone.

"Then they tested me against Boca Juniors and it went off smoothly.

"As I had a bad relationship with Lyon, I signed until 2005, and frankly I don't regret it.

"It is so nice today that I am in talks to extend until 2008.

"For five years, Bobby Robson has brought his personal touch, little by little, and I feel the team is improving at all levels.

"He triggered off the new Newcastle."

Lets just hope that Bernard stays part of this "new Newcastle" as the Magpies' hopefully go on to defeat Marseille in the UEFA Cup Semi-Finals, before landing the Premiership Title next season ;-) !
