Shepherd Speaks About "Unacceptable" Fifth Spot

Fourth place was the bare minimum for Newcastle this season, according to chairman Freddy Shepherd, but with a 5th place finish how does he feel?

Newcastle however appeared to have a very good campaign, losing just 8 games.  What went wrong? AWAY FORM!

Despite rumours about Robson leaving, Shepherd insisted that Sir Bobby would not be sacked - instead, he will see out the remaining year on his contract.

Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme, Shepherd also said:

"A fifth-place finish is not acceptable for us. Fourth place was the bare minimum,

"This summer we will have to look at everything from top to bottom."

Regarding Robson, Shepherd added:

"Bobby Robson has another 12 months on his contract. I can only keep saying to everyone that he has another 12 months on his contract.

"I cannot say it any other way. I don't think you can sack Bobby Robson."

Rumours recently have linked defender Jonathon Woodgate with a move to either Arsenal or Manchester United, but it would require a healthy £50M bid to part Shepherd from his England international.

United are reportedly set to offer £12 million for Woodgate but that is not enough for Shepherd who said:

"We have a reputation of coming up with funds for our manager. Bobby has spent £64m in his four and a half years here. Our record speaks for itself."
