Newcastle United's Stephen Caldwell is to make the short trip accross the Tyne & Wear divide, to join local rivals, Sunderland.

The 23-year-old Scotland international, who spent a loan spell at Leeds last season (netting once in 13 games) is out of contract and is set to move to Mick Mcarthy's club.

After signing a pre-contract agreement, Caldwell will be the first player for 7 years to join Sunderland from Newcastle, since Lee Clark's move to the Mackems in 1997.

Caldwell has been unable to make the Newcastle first team on a regular basis, but, when called upon, has proved useful. Jonathon Woodgate, Titus Bramble, and Andy O'Brien are all ahead of the defender in the pecking order though, and Caldwell deserves the chance to start afresh - with regular action.

So, with 37 appearances, two goals, and Champions League experience, it is time to say good-bye!

Good Luck!
