Newcastle United have slammed rumours that their interest in Everton teenager Wayne Rooney is part of a conspiracy to enable Manchester United to sign him. The club claim that their offer for Rooney was serious and appropriate legal action regarding the matter will be taken.
Reports today suggested that Newcastle's bid was an attempt to start a bidding war for the youngster with Manchester United to sign him.
The conspiracy rumours claimed that Newcastle would then sign John O'Shea.
A statement from the club however, read:
"Those allegations are offensive and absurd. The suggestion that Newcastle United would be helping one of its main competitors secure one of the most talented players in Europe is bizarre.
"The club has already confirmed its interest in Rooney and the club has been working on the bid for a number of weeks.
"He would be a tremendous asset to the club. Newcastle is taking the allegations of conspiracy very seriously and is currently seeking legal advice."
