Shola Ameobi, and Laurent Robert have all openly backed the new Newcastle United manager, Graeme Souness.

When rumours were doing the rounds about Wayne Rooney Ameobi was quick to suggest he may not be happy in a situation where he would have to compete even more for a team place. But today the young striker spoke out about the appointment of Souness from Blackburn Rovers and declared it “a positive thing!”

“Every single player here wants to improve, with no exceptions, and I believe that we will all knuckle down and do that under the new manager.

Graeme Souness is known for being a strict disciplinarian and I see that as a positive thing. Most of the stories about players causing trouble in the dressing room are untrue, but I can't argue that a new strict regime won't do us some good.

On a personal note, I've now been presented with a great opportunity to stake my claim for a regular place.” He continued "I want to play every game that Newcastle are involved in, so I'll be going all out to make a good first impression next week."

Robert who has been at Newcastle since 2002, seemed to be speaking for all the players as he supported Freddy Shepherds decision to appoint Souness;

"The players will all be right behind him because all we want at the club is success. We all care passionately about that.

"We want the fans to enjoy winning trophies and we are in three cup competitions this season and the league.

We know when we play to our best we are a match for any side in the country and for that matter, any side in Europe.

We have to do it on the pitch, but all the players are very excited and want to get the season going."

With players hopes up high and the boost of a new manager let’s hope they show their respect by beating Souness’ former team Blackburn Rovers on Saturday!
