Former Man United and Aston Villa defender Ronny Johnsen will hold talks with Graeme Souness this week with a view to signing a short term contract.

The Norweigan international had returned to Norway to spend time with his family in his homeland, but told Norweigan television that he would be keen to join Newcastle given the chance.

The player was an integral part of Man United's treble winning squad of the 98/99 season, forming an impressive partnership with Jaap Stam. More recently, he was a key player at the back for Villa, crucial to their success in finishing sixth last season.

Although his fitness may be questionable at this late stage in his career, his experience could be useful in shoring up the leaky Toon defence, which has been lacking since the departure of Jonathan Woodgate to Real Madrid.
