34-year-old Alan Shearer plans to retire at the end of this season, but new Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness has insisted that he will try and keep the striker if he does well this season.

As quoted on BBC Sport, Souness said:

"Strikers like that are priceless to managers and no manager worth his salt would not try to persuade him to keep playing.

"If Alan Shearer scores 20 goals this season or 15 or even a dozen, then I'll be plaguing him not to retire."
