Bernard, who is out of contract in the summer, speaks about his desire for a new deal - but insists that it is not greed which is driving his desire.

The 25-year-old French full back is due for further contract talks this week and claims he would like to stay at St James' Park, but at the same time, would be willing to walk if the contract offered isn't what he feels he deserves.

Bernard said:

"I am not being greedy but I believe I deserve a better deal.

"I do not think I am in the top ten earners at this club and that can't be right.

"I was one of the best players in the team last season and just want to be paid what I'm worth.

"It would break my heart to leave Newcastle but sometimes you have to think about your own career.

"I believe in the chairman (Freddy Shepherd). He is a good man and I just hope that he looks after me.

"It would be difficult to leave Newcastle but sometimes you have to do things you don't want."

He added:

"I know there are clubs where I could get even more money than I am asking for here. They are ready to sign me.

"I can't say who those clubs are but I might have to leave if things do not work out here."
