Welsh striker Craig Bellamy has paid tribute to his Newcastle United captain Alan Shearer, haling him a ‘legend’.

Shearer was absent for the Newcastle side that beat Sochaux 4-0 with a thingh injury but is excepted back in a weeks time to face Chelsea.

Bellamy said:

"Alan is a huge, huge player for Newcastle United and before people start talking about me and Patrick Kluivert as a strike partnership for the future they should remember that.

"He loves his club and he's a one-off. He's a true footballing legend.

"But football is football and it's a dog eat dog world. Everybody wants to play in their favourite position and I have to make the most of my opportunity while Alan is injured."

"Players will always be replaced and I will be replaced one day," he added. "In five years' time will Craig Bellamy be at Newcastle? I don't know.

"Five years after that I'll be long forgotten but Alan is unique in that respect. Whether this is his last season or not he'll be remembered by United's fans long after he retires and long after I've retired."
