Despite being linked with moves to Barcelona and Newcastle United in recent weeks, Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson has assured his club that he would like to stay at the club.

Magpies boss, Graham Souness, who wants 3 new defenders in January, has had his scout’s watch Upson is recent weeks and he is seen as the idea replacement for defender Jonathan Woodgate who was sold to Real Madrid in the summer.

It was thought that the Magpies will bid around £6 million for Upson, with Steve Bruce likely to accept as Birmingham are desperate to sign a big money striker.

Newcastle have shown an interest in many other defenders such as Rangers centre-back Jean-Alain Boumsong and Norwegian international Brede Hangeland. There were rumours of a bid for Manchester United’s John O’Shea but these were denied - although O'Shea feels he will be sold in January.

Upson said:

"It's flattering to be linked with other clubs.

"But I'm happy here and they want to talk to me.

"I've shown people I'm good enough and I've had help from manager Steve Bruce, who knows a thing or two about playing centre half!"
