Newcastle held by Everton

Lee Carsley scored a superb free-kick after 56 minutes to earn a point for Everton after Craig Bellamy's opener on 5 minutes.

Craig Bellamy played a brilliant one-two with Patrick Kluivert to be through one-on-one with Nigel Martyn and he made no mistake to give Newcastle the lead after 5 minutes.

Jermaine Jenas' volley hit the bar and Alan Stubbs cleared Patrick Kluivert's effort off the line. Stubbs and Tim Cahill nearly grabbed an equaliser for Everton before half-time but the Magpies went in leading at the break.

After Carsley's equaliser, Bellamy struck the post, Marcus Bent missed a open goal after rounding Given and Osman forced a good save from Given.

Newcastle's first goal was a result of good passing. Given kicked the ball upfield which was headed on by bowyer. Bellamy then played a quick one-two with Kluivert and was through on goal and gave a quality finish.

Newcastle's pace and precise passing was causing all sorts of problems for the visitors and Jenas was twice unlucky not to add a second goal after Kluivert put him through but Martyn made a good save.

And he was even closer when his acrobatic volley cannoned off the woodwork after the ball had bobbled about in the Everton penalty area.

Newcastle again nearly grabbed a second, when after failing to clear, Patrick Kluivert had a shot from the edge of the area which was cleared off the line by Stubbs.

A succession of corners followed for Everton and Stubbs' goalbound header was accidentally blocked by Cahill, whose back-heeled effort was inches wide.

In the second-half, Cahill had a good shout for a penalty after being pushed from behind by Steve Taylor but his Everton team-mates didn't see it and he was the only one to appeal.

Sparked into life, Newcastle tried to regain control of the game and Kieron Dyer was the next to benefit from Kluivert's superb vision when he ran on to his through-ball but, after rounding Martyn, he failed to squeeze in from a difficult angle.

Everton then showed great 'bouncebackability', with Carsley stunning Newcastle with a curling a free-kick into the top corner from 30 yards which left Given stranded.

An already-entertaining game began opening up further and Bellamy joined Jenas in hitting the woodwork when his raking drive crashed off the post with Martyn well-beaten.

Gravesen then put Marcus Bent through but after rounding Given and having an empty net, he couldn't finish and he put it wide.

It was Newcastle's turn to have a penalty appeal turned down after it appeared that Kilbane and Dyer clashed shins, sending Dyer flying but the referee was having none of it.

Bellamy should really have made the points safe when Kluivert crossed from the left and the ball fell to him in acres of space but former Newcastle defender Pistone blocked it and the match finished 1-1.
