French full-back Olivier Bernard has been offered an improved deal by Newcastle United. The 25-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has made it publically known in recent weeks that he has been dissapointed with the lack of progress over a new deal.

Although some talks have been held in recent weeks, a deal now looks likely.

The deal, believed to be worth just over £1 million per season will run for 5 years and should see Bernard stay at St James' Park.

FREDDY SHEPHERD SAID:

"We have tried to come to a compromise with Olivier Bernard and his representatives and we have made what we consider a very good offer.

"It's an improved offer and we are hoping that he decides to sign it and play for us for the next five years."
