A recent poll held on this site concluded:
| Question: Who's our best centre half? | ||||||||||

Let's be realistic. We are 11th in the table, level with Man City, one point ahead of Spurs and THIRTEEN behind Everton. We are being linked with players who we can possibly get (Huth, Boumsong, O'Shea). They are all decent defenders and are probably better and less error prone than any of our centre backs.
I'd be happy with any of them although my preference wud be Van Buyten who has already played in this league and is also a good leader. Huth wud be great too- German international who klinsmann rates. Boumsong is better than Mexes and O'Shea has plenty of european experience.
It's bout time we strengthened our defence. The CB problem has never been solved and we've relied too much on Given, our attack and other teams (Everton, Aston Villa, Bolton, Liverpool) being inconsistent/poor to keep up with the top three over the past few seasons or so.
Souness said he needs 4 players, which i feel/hope is going to be 2CBs, LM and a RM. Will any of those players mentioned want to come to us if we have an awful run up until christmas which leaves us further behind the top six european places (say Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Everton, Middlesborough)? Wud FF still be willing to splash the cash then?
Let's look at it this way- we haven't had a top INTERNATIONAL central defender play for us(Woodgate- not many caps but still international class). Huth and Boumsong are promising youngsters who have already played in the first team for their countries unlike Bramble, Dawson, Davenport or whichever young ****a we're linked with.
Here's my choices:
1. Van Buyten (6.5 mill?)
2. Boumsong (3.5 mill + Robert or 6 mill straight?)
If we do sell Robert i'd say get someone in who can link midfield up with forwards and take players on without jus relying on high balls into the box.i.e Malbranque.
We need to get our defence sorted in 2005.
