It has emerged that drugs squad officers raided a mansion owned by former Newcastle United ace Steve Watson, and found a "substantial" cannabis farm - although Watson himself is not connected to the findings.

Two people were arrested during raids on Watson's house, which is in the Darras Hall area of Ponteland, close to the homes of Alan Shearer and Kieron Dyer, and in Lemington.

Police detectives were keen to stress that the Everton midfielder, who bought the house six years ago, was renting out the property and knew nothing about the drugs farms.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We executed search warrants at addresses in Darras Hall and Lemington early yesterday morning.

"Two substantial cannabis farms have been recovered which are being examined by the forensic science service.

"A man and a woman have been arrested and are helping police with their inquiries.

"We can confirm that the house in Darras Hall is owned by Steve Watson. However, we do not intend to speak to him about this matter."
