Newcastle have tried again for Rangers defender Jean-Alain Boumsong, this time bidding £8m for the French international - but the Ibrox club have turned down the offer.

However, Boumsong's agent, Willie McKay, told BBC Sport: "I think he would be keen to move to the Premiership, but he is not going to short-change the Rangers support."

A bid of £10m should be sufficient for Rangers to allow Boumsong to leave the club. The France defender moved to Ibrox on a free in the summer after leaving Auxerre and has impressed ever since.

McKay added: "That is a lot of money for a defender and would be the biggest transfer in history from a Scottish club."
