It was reported yesterday that Newcastle United were in the race to sign Real Madrid ace, Morientes - and then today it was reported that Real Madrid had confirmed (and turned down) a bid from the Magpies'. However, for Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd, this is the first he has heard!

According to reports today, Real Madrid had confirmed a Newcastle bid for Spanish striker Fernando Morientes.

Reports were circulating in Liverpool yesterday, but Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd told Alan Oliver of the Evening Chronicle: "We are not going to comment on every player we are going to be linked with between now and the end of January.

"I don't know what it is about Newcastle United but everyone wants to associate their players with us. It's now the start of the silly season and you can bet we will be linked with another six players over the weekend."

Do we beleive Fat Fred on this one?
