It has been confirmed that Newcastle are in talks with Ghana defender, Samuel Kuffour.

The 28-year-old’s contract is set to expire in the summer at Bayern Munich and they have decided to cash in now, rather than get nothing for him.

Bayern Munich said:

"The offer has been there for four weeks, but Sammy hasn't dealt with it so far."

"We only can tell the player: 'There is an offer, we are ready to speak with them, if you want it.' If the player doesn't want it, we won't speak."

"He always wanted to finish the season with us and move on afterwards, and a change probably would be good for him. But maybe he gets his act together in spring."

If it goes through, this will be the 3rd January signing for Souness, all of them being defenders with Babayaro and Boumsong having already hade their switches.

Newcastle have also made enquiries into Manchester City defender, Sylvain Distin, who spent a season on Tyneside on loan earlier in his career.
