Newcastle boss Graeme Souness says that when he leaves the club, he would love to see Alan Shearer take over as manager. And, although Souness wants Shearer to postpone retirement in order to reach Jackie Milburn's record, when he does retire, there will be a coaching role for him at the club.

Quoted on Sky Sports, Souness said:

"Without a shadow of a doubt, Alan is a future manager of this club.

"In fact, I would love to hand over a successful Newcastle side to him.

"If he retires from playing at the end of the season - and I hope he doesn't - then I still want him around the place and there will be a role for him.

"My admiration for him means I'd be prepared, as long as he's around for him to go with what he wants."

As for breaking Jackie Milburn's all-time goalscoring record, the Scot added:

"Alan has got to go for the record - it would add to the legendary status he has around this club.

"I'm going to be doing everything to persuade him to stay.

"I know that if he stays here we'll have a far better chance of achieving what we want."
