‘Lazy’ Robert Defiant over Defending

Despite talks over a new contract, Laurent Robert has stated he will not change his game and is not keen on tracking back.

Souness wanted the winger to up his work-rate and track back more but Robert is not keen on changing his game.

Robert appears to have been a bit arrogant over the matter, just as he has worked his way back into Souness' good books.

Robert said:

"Souness keeps saying I have to be more defensive minded, but that is not my game,"

"It's just not natural for me, I work hard but going forward - that is the way I can make things easier for my team-mates.”

"I want to be the best left winger in the world - not the best left back."

"I would prefer to remain here, but if the manager doesn't want me, it is no problem,"

"There will be other clubs, but probably not in England. It will be difficult to join Manchester United or Chelsea and after Newcastle, why would I go to Southampton or Middlesbrough.”

"I think it is more likely I would go to Spain or Italy.”

Robert’s agent said:

"Respect is growing between them [Robert and Souness] and it's no surprise that Laurent wants to stay at Newcastle,"

"He wants a three-year contract, but Real Mallorca contacted me wanting to take him in January and say they want to take him in June. Other clubs are also keen."
