Shearer: Blame Me

Newcastle captain Alan Shearer has accepted the blame for Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat away to Norwich City.

It was Newcastle’s 4th straight loss in what can only be described as a freefall.

And Shearer has manfully accepted blame after making one of the most horrendous misses of his career.

Shearer said:

"If I had put that one in, it might have been a different story.

"It was a sitter and if I had not missed it, it would have put us one up midway through the first half.

"I was already wheeling away to celebrate and I took my eye off the ball. I know I should have hit the target.

"Yet after that, I was still confident of getting another chance and scoring a goal. In fact, I was hoping to get another chance to make up for it.

"Mine was one of the many chances we had and we had enough not to have lost this game.

"They scored a wonder goal to go one up and after we equalised, we were done by the sucker punch in the end.

"I take my hat off to the lad that scored that first goal. I'm not sure whether he has ever hit one like that before, or whether he'll hit another one like it again.

"But when you are on the kind of run we are on at the moment, that's the sort of thing that happens to you and you just have to accept it."

"Our dressing room isn't a nice place tonight, and it's tough for us at the moment. We know that there will be criticism but we are big enough and strong enough to take it.

"We have no choice but to go to Old Trafford. We know that it will be a backs-to-the-wall situation against Manchester United but we will just have to get on with it."
