Woodgate Watch: Defender Finally Makes Real Debut

Following numerous injury setbacks, former Newcastle United defender Jonathon Woodagte made his Real Madrid debut last night... but failed to last the whole 90 minutes - and for once his troubles were not injury related.

It didn't take the English defender long to make an impact on the game, as he scored the only goal in the first half.. on 25 minutes, netting a header from 12 yards - it is just a shame that Woodgate headed it past his own keeper and not Athletico's!

Things would surely only get better... or would they?  Surely Woodgate's return to action could not get any worse.

Having already been booked in the first half for a clumsy challenge, the Teesider picked up a second yellow on 65 minutes, dismissing him from the game.

On the game, Woodgate commented:

"It was not the best start in the world.

"I couldn't believe it. I went to try to block the ball and it just skimmed off my head. Obviously, I did not want to get an own goal.

"I just can't believe I got sent off. I didn't think the second yellow card was right, you know, but it's the referee's decision.

"I want to thank the public, who were brilliant when I was walking off. They were all clapping and cheering.

"Physically I felt good. My leg was no problem and I felt strong. I will come back stronger."

Real Madrid went on to with the game 3-1.
