Newcastle captain Alan Shearer has said the team can handle the pressure from Newcastle fans after a 3-2 win over rivals, Sunderland.

Pressure was mounting on Souness and the team after a defeat to Wigan, but they came good, beating their rivals 3-2 in a thriller of a game.

Shearer said:

"There's always pressure at this football club because there's 52,000 demanding success,"

"We can handle it and the manager can.

"Fifty-two thousand have got bragging rights now.

"It's three points but it's more than that because it's Sunderland. But it's no good winning today and losing next week."

"It was a huge win, particularly after last week.

"We had a bit of luck when the ball hit the crossbar but we didn't have it at Wigan last week."
