Real Betis winger Joaquin has revealed that Newcastle United have expressed their interest in taking him to St James' Park. The Spanish international winger was close to a move to Chelsea in the last winter transfer window but latest reports in Spain claim Newcastle have made an approach.

It was suggested that Newcastle have contacted Real Betis to ask how much it would take to prise 24-year-old Joaquin away from the club.

And while it is understood the player would prefer to stay in Spain, possibly with a move to Real Madrid who are constantly being linked to him, Joaquin spoke about the links to Newcastle with Spanish newspaper Marca:

"I cannot deny that the rumours are true.

"It is silly to talk about this because there is no offer. A thousand things could happen at Christmas, but right now there is little point in talking about it.

"In these difficult times however, it is always nice that a great Premiership side like Newcastle are interested in you."
