Referee Mike Dean last night issued a public apology following the postponement of Newcastle United's home match with Charlton just 25 minutes before kick-off - despite the fact that at 5.45pm and 6.30pm the pitch was given the tumbs up.
However, it was due to safety concerns outside the ground that the decision was made.
MIKE DEAN: "Unfortunately for the spectators it was down to a safety issue.
"The roads outside of the stadium were gradually getting worse as the evening wore on. I arrived at the stadium at half past five, we had to walk the last half a mile because of the snow.
"The pitch was playable when we first checked it, and then again half an hour later the lads were clearing the snow and it was fine.
"At that stage, which was about half past six, everything was fine outside of the ground as well, the roads were being gritted and there were no problems.
"But a further snowfall caused problems outside of the stadium, there were one or two car crashes and it was at that point the safety officer decided to pull the plug.
"At 7.20pm it was a little bit later than we'd have liked to call the game off, but it was the right decision."
"I am sorry," Dean added. "I wanted the game to be played as well as everyone else because I've travelled 200 miles. The pitch is playable. Outside influences, which are road traffic, safety etc, are obviously a major concern. We all have to try get home in one piece."
